Softly Landing in the School Year

Softly Landing in the School Year
In this episode sponsored by The Essential Calendar, a popular must-have tool for busy families, Executive Function Coach Emily Hawe and I chat about how to help kids ease into the school year.  Our conversation covers the ways that mindfulness can support executive function skills like emotional regulation, focus, impulse control, prioritizing, time management and other actions that are important for success in school.  Recognizing that these skills are highly taxed at the beginning of a new school year, Emily shares insights on how adults can scaffold the development of healthy executive function skills in children to ease the transition into the new school routine.  If you're feeling stressed about the school year or if it's getting off to a rocky start, this episode is for you!

Emily loves helping students reach their full potential. Over the course of her career as a certified teacher, a college advisor, and an executive function coach. She has seen time and time again that the largest obstacle blocking students from excelling is poor executive function skills. These are the skills that allow us to plan, pay attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks successfully. It wasn't until after becoming a teacher and seeing students struggle with these skills that she decided to do a deep dive into the causes and solutions. She developed systems for struggling parents and students to positively impact their school experience. By learning these executive functioning skills, she saw clients go from failing classes to achieving a B average and heading off to college. Now she's taking her in depth knowledge of how the brain learns to develop programs that empower students with effective study skills. In addition to her courses and private coaching work, she's a staff developer for multiple school districts in the New York City metropolitan area. She holds a master's degree in higher education administration, pupil and personal services, and a master's degree in English education from teachers’ college at Columbia University.
